In early 2004 the AER Board of Directors renamed the AER scholarship the "AER Billy Don Sims Scholarship" in honor of Billy Don Sims’s memory, membership in Alabama AER, and his advocacy and professional contribution to the field of blindness. To date the BDS Scholarship through various fundraising activities has exceeded its original goal of $125,000 in principle. Alabama AER Chapter members can be very proud of their efforts to support an annual scholarship to assist a student planning to work in the field of blindness in Alabama. The presentation of the 2023 scholarship to Tonya R. Chatman marked the 21st person to receive a scholarship bringing the grand total of awarded scholarships to $40,700.Thanks to all of you who have helped make this possible!
